Underwater Macro Experiment : First pictures with a Pentax W10 - underwater macro! The reason for adding this camera to my kit was for underwater imaging of insects and fish so I thought that it would be appropriate to start off with the first images as such. So far so good. I will definetly need good light to do this in the field. The posted images are unretouched - the brighter ones taken with the flash, the darker without. All files are Copyright © 2006 J. 060514 Lake Chopaka Insect Macros : A macro gallery of lake dwelling insects of interest to a fly fishermen from a mid-May trip to Lake Chopaka in North Central Washington state. The margins of Lake Chopaka were sampled to determine what insects were most abundant in mid-May. All areas sampled were along the shoreline in less than two feet of water. The most prevelant insects were callibaetis mayfly nymphs, damselfly nymphs, and gammerus scuds. Several dragonfly nymphs, aquatic beetles, snails, and caddis larvae were also captured and photographed. The callibaetis mayfly hatch was in progress, so images include adult mayflies with Damselflies beginning their emergence several days thereafter. Images have been cropped and batch processed for web display. All files are Copyright © 2006 J. Andrew Towell Please contact me at troutstreaming@gmail.com to negotiate for any and all usage rights.

Winter Yakima River Aquatic Insects : Several locations on the margins of the Yakima River in Washington were sampled to determine what insects were active in the river in mid-February. All areas sampled were along riffles in less than one foot of water. There were two types of stonefly nymphs present in the margins of the Yakima River that I picked up while screening. The darkest bodied ones were the largest and most active and have been identified as Golden Stones. The smaller stones were identified as Summer Stone's and not Skwala's as I had been hoping to find. Many thanks to Roger Rohrbeck at www.flyfishingentomology.com for identifying the stones. The count was about eighteen short-wing, two goldens, one crawler mayfly (no pictures) and several aquatic worms (one bad picture.) Images have been cropped and batch processed for web display.
